The writings of Robert George Torrens, B.A., B.D.Sc., T.C.D.
My father, Robert George Torrens, as well as being Honorary dental surgeon to the Royal Victoria and West Hants Hospital, Bournemouth, was something of an author. I have transcribed some of his writings to electronic format.
Dental disease - its chemical causation and cure is a rare book as only a few copies were sampled: the rest of the stock was destroyed by a bomb in 1939. In the early 1930s Dr. F.W.Broderick has been working on caries and pyorrhea and had theorised that body chemistry was heavily involved. My father worked with Broderick and investigated further, studying blood colloids and Brownian movement with an "Ultra Microscope". Although the chemical causation is now discredited the book is still interesting as it is a history of science for the dental surgeon and it is eminently readable.
50 Years as a Tooth-Puller was never published and but y father left the typescript which I have transcribed. It is a fascinating history of the formative years of the National Health Service. It also demonstrates how little has changed in NHS dentistry!
