According to a DEFRA publication There are more than 220 chalk streams in the UK. These represent 75 to 80 per cent of this habitat type globally. Chal streams are then important.

Chalk streams are usually considered to be the exclusive property of the south of England, but here in Cambridge we also have a number of chalk streams. Unfortunately most of them rise not far above sea level so they quickly flow onto flat fen country here they have been turned into little more than drainage ditches. There is still beauty and interesting flora and fauna to be found.
