Genealogy mailing lists

Introduction

This page tells you a little about the mailing lists and how to join. Joining the lists involves a few steps, to make sure won't join and that you do not join by acccident. What is a mailing list?

  1. You send a 'Subscribe' email.
  2. The list manager software sends a reply - 'Please confirm you wish to join'.
  3. You reply to this email.
  4. The list manager software sends a reply: 'You have joined. Welcome.'
  1. Torrens list: for discussing matters related to Torrens/Torrence/Torrance families genealogy world-wide.
  2. Bann Valley list: for anyone descending from (or interested in) the Bann Valley families.
  3. Youghal list: for genealogy and information on Youghal, Cork.

Possible problems when first subscribing

Above, I said Clicking on this Subscribe link below should cause your emailer to do this for you. Seems there are some naughty email programs which do not work properly on these links (they don't like the perfectly legal + in the address) and send to 'subscribe@Torrens.org' instead of 'Listname+subscribe@Torrens.org', so please check this is correct.
Emails to subscribe@Torrens.org are bounced as undeliverable as there is no such email address.

What happens next?

Your 'Join' email will be received by the Mailing List Manager program and it will automatically send you back a 'Confirm subscription' email to which you should reply. Once the list manager receives your reply, you will be on the list.

When you receive this 'Confirm subscription' email simply clicking on the 'Reply' button and sending the resulting reply email should do the deed for you.

If you do not receive such a 'Confirm subscription' email then you should check the setting of your spam filters. The FAQ page has more information on Spam filters.

Possible problems when confirming

Some email programs, when you hit reply, do not use the proper Reply-to: address which is in the headers of the received email. You should be sending this confirm email to an address such as:


BannValley+confsub-124fe5534995602d-youremail=yourdomain.com@Torrens.org

A number of email programs are also broken in that, when you reply to the 'confirm' email, they split the return address at the - or the = sign and use a return address of, for example, yourdomain.com@Torrens.org. This will not work!

And finally

If all goes well, when your confirmation has been received, you will receive back a 'Welcome to the List' email which will tell you you have been subscribed. (If you don't get this, your confirmation has not worked - check the Possible problems when confirming, above and resend your confirmation to the correct email address.

Your first posting

You may ewll feel you want to 'lurk' on the list a little while to see what other list members write: that's quite all right. However like lots of lists - it tends to go quiet and is awakened when a new person joins. So, when you are happy to do so, I suggest you send to the list an email introducing yourself, and saying what you interest in the list is, so that other members may know about you and may respond to you.
